IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is one of the largest international professional organizations dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists, and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests in a career in engineering. The IEEE WIE Affinity Group, College of Engineering Chengannur celebrated AURA, WIE Week from 5th to 11th of March 2018. It was centered on the theme ‘Empower women to explore and innovate’ and comprised of various technical workshops and talks. It was conducted with an objective to bring girls to the spotlight and celebrate the power and confidence that education encompasses. Exploring the field were done through following events,

1. Documentation Session
2. BYOS (Build Your Own Sensor)
3. Graphic Design & Photoshop
4. Introduction to FAB Lab (Hand on the session)


The aim of the documentation session was to provide a better acknowledgment to the students on how to write professional resumes, event proposals, letters, emails, and event reports. The session was taken by Amalu Susan Santhosh, Joint Secretary IEEE Student Branch College of Engineering Chengannur.

The session included familiarization of:

• Informal content writing: Students were made familiarized about the informal contents like WhatsApp and Facebook contents. The rules and tips regarding the content writing were also instructed.

• Formal content writing: Discussions were made on writing formal contents and its format, rules, specifications, fonts to be used etc. Many samples were shown to write professional emails, resumes, event reports, etc.
The number of women participation was more which symbolizes the first step to empowerment from the college. The one-hour session was very helpful for the students as most of them were not aware of the proper format of the writings.

BYOS(Build your own Sensor)

The session was taken by an expertise in the field, Mr. Mohammad Roshan, CIT-CEC Mentor, whose enthusiasm and the keen interest in sharing knowledge inspired the audience. It began with an introduction on the session’s aim:
● To provide students the opportunity to build their own detectors and electronic
measurement devices.
● To familiarise with basic Dip Trace software to create PCB.

Dip Trace is EDA/CAD software for creating schematic diagrams and printed circuit
boards. The developers provided a multi-lingual interface and tutorials. Through a
sample circuit diagram, the class was guided through how to add the components, place
them, auto-rotate, resize features etc.
After the schematic diagram was done, it was time to wrap up the class for the day. Before
concluding the session, Mr. Mohammed Roshan also made a briefing on printing the
circuit in the well maintained Fab Lab, soldering the components and sensor detection.
The session was carried out in an interactive manner hence even the amateurs grasped
the concept in an effective way. The session ended at 5:00 pm.

Graphic Design & Photoshop

The creative session was scheduled for two alternate days starting from 8th March 2018
from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm and was led by Ganesh S, IEEE Student Branch College of
Engineering Chengannur Vice Chairman, who has expertise in designing and
Photoshop-related functions. He put forward a fun-filled interactive session on Graphic
Design & Photoshop to enlighten and then instigate the participants. As planned, the
workshop began at 4 pm. The program was aimed at providing better apprehension of
graphic designing and to familiarize the basic Photoshop related functions.
The workshop was divided broadly into two sessions: first ‘a talk by guest speaker’ and
second ‘a hands-on session’. The sessions used a variety of approaches—presentations, discussions etc. The two-day workshop covered both theoretical and practical aspects of Graphic Designing. Participants took a keen interest in practical work to acquire hands-on experience. Students from various branches attended the session with great enthusiasm which hints at the very success of the workshop.

FABLAB Workshop

A one-day FABLAB Workshop was conducted on 10th March 2018 to empower,
enlighten and invoke technical knowledge in girls and to polish their technical abilities to
keep up with the pace of advancing technology. On 10th March 2018, the sessions were taken by senior students of the institution Mr. Harris Joyse and Mr. James Joseph, CIT-CEC Mentors, whose enthusiasm and a keen interest in sharing knowledge inspired the audience.

It began with a quick introduction to the section’s aim:
• To provide students the opportunity to build their own innovative products.
• To familiarize students with the Hard and Soft design tools.
The session introduced new design software like Landscape, AutoCAD Fusion 360, and
Cura etc. The design software was provided to all the participants and guided for designing innovative products through sample designing. After designing, an introduction to the laser printer and 3D printing technology was given. Sample designs were printed and the design expiates were discussed among the students. The session was carried out in an interactive manner hence even the amateurs grasped the concept in an effective way. The session proved effective from the feedbacks and active responses received from the attended participants. The workshop wrapped up by 5:00 pm.
