The IEEE WIE StudentTeacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program was developed to address the growing concern that, at a young age, girls are discouraged from careers in mathematics, science, and engineering. This educational outreach program promotes the involvement of IEEE members with local junior high and high schools in order to create a positive image of engineering careers. Through a onetoone interaction between society, volunteers and a StudentTeacher Team, STAR aim is to create a technical support network for teachers and a mentoring program for students. This year marked a change in the way STAR Programmes are conducted across Kochi Subsection of Kerala Section with a new decision to conduct the event zonally under the banner name ENLIGHTEN 1.0. The STAR event conducted by Alappuzha Zone was coorganised by four colleges College Of Engineering Cherthala, Saintgits College Of Engineering, Sree Buddha College Of Engineering and College
Of Engineering, Chengannur with College Of Engineering Chengannur as the zonal coordinator.
The event was conducted in two phases PHASE 1 was an inschool event and in PHASE 2, selected students from the school visited College Of Engineering Cherthala. The event aimed at increasing the awareness about careers in STEM amongst school students, especially girls. With the motto to “inspire, encourage, and empower women” towards taking up leadership positions and also encourage them in STEM, the event provided a platform to mentor young women in junior and high schools.
